Metabolic disorders and interorgan communication

Secreted factors-mediated interorgan communication is essential for maintaining systemic energy homeostasis and perturbation of interorgan communication is highly associated with diverse metabolic disorders, like diabetes and cancer cachexia. For example, defects in insulin-associated pancreas-liver axis lead to glucose intolerance and hyperglycemia. We will integrate functional genomics, proteomics, genetic manipulation, as well as animal models, to 1) investigate how hepatic carbohydrate metabolism is non-autonomously regulated by secreted factors that are produced by a distal organ; 2) dissect the molecular mechanisms whereby tumor-derived ligands result in host wasting, including muscle atrophy and lipid loss.
